Stauch got his start by canvassing for political groups on the streets of Boston and quickly progressed to his current position as a prime fundraiser for a prestigious New England College. “Asking for $5—and getting it—takes about as much skill and guts as asking for $1 million,” said Stauch. “The principles are the same. And anyone can learn them.”
In "Effective Frontline Fundraising," Stauch offers hard-earned wisdom every organization needs to know. The book is designed for those creating new fundraising capabilities in local nonprofits—like humane societies or history museums—as well as those seeking major gifts for nationally known nonprofit organizations or political campaigns. No matter the size of the nonprofit, the book will prove a lifeline for organizations struggling to survive in today’s troubled economy. The good news, according to Stauch: There are plenty of generous donors awaiting your call or visit. “Americans will have given somewhere around $300 billion to charities and other nonprofits in 2011,” he said. “There are often pockets of wealth where you least expect it. If you become your own detective, you’ll soon learn where and how to look for wealth.”
"Effective Frontline Fundraising" shows you how to become that detective, and then ask for a donation successfully. But the book’s emphasis isn’t only on what is known as “the ask.” Instead, Stauch demonstrates the importance of cultivating donors for the long term. And that is something you can’t do if you view donors’ pockets as simply something to pick. Stewardship is equally important to successful fundraising. That means keeping donors in the loop, asking for opinions and input, and in general including them in the organization’s activities going forward. “That,” said Stauch emphatically, “is what turns a one-time gift into multiple gifts that sustain an organization for the long term.” This is the goal for every organization that needs donations for sustainability.
Nonprofits have important missions like feeding the disadvantaged, promoting the arts, supporting education, developing the economy, finding cures to health problems, and much more. And all of this can be accomplished—with "Effective Frontline Fundraising."
